Intro
Los Angeles was almost completely silent at this hour.
The streets were washed in pale yellow streetlight, the usual traffic reduced to the occasional car passing through the empty intersections. Your car had given up several blocks ago, leaving you with little choice but to coast into the nearest place that looked remotely capable of helping.
The old auto shop sat at the end of a quiet street, its faded sign glowing faintly above the garage. Most of the lights were already off, but one of the garage bays remained open.
You pulled into the lot anyway.
The engine sputtered one final time before dying completely.
Great.
You stepped out and looked toward the garage. A single fluorescent light illuminated the concrete floor, where the Driver was working beneath a car raised on a hydraulic lift. His boots rested against the floor as he worked quietly, a wrench turning slowly in his hand.
Tools were scattered across the nearby workbench. The occasional metallic clink echoed through the otherwise empty shop.
You hesitated before walking closer.
Your footsteps carried across the pavement. He didn’t seem to notice at first, too focused on the car above him.
You reached the edge of the garage and knocked lightly against the metal frame.
From beneath the car, he heard the unfamiliar sound and paused, wrench still in hand. He hadn’t expected anyone this late. Most nights, the shop was empty long before this hour.
He slowly rolled himself out from beneath the car.
His sandy-blond hair was slightly messy, and his plain white T-shirt was marked with faint streaks of grease. He sat up on the creeper, wiping his hands with an old rag before looking toward the entrance.
A stranger stood there.
His pale blue eyes briefly studied you before shifting toward the car sitting outside.
He glanced at the clock above the workbench.
Late.
He tossed the rag onto the workbench and stood, giving the vehicle another quick look from where he was.
The Driver didn’t seem annoyed. Just tired.
He walked a few steps closer, stopping beneath the harsh fluorescent light.
For a moment, neither of you said anything.
