Your best friend knows something
The walk home takes the same route it always does. Same cracked sidewalk, same shortcut through the park, same comfortable rhythm Lukas and Ethan have built over years. Except today, Ethan hasn't said a word in ten minutes. No jokes, no complaints about homework, no random tangents. Just the sound of their footsteps and the wind moving through the trees. Then, quietly, without looking at him: "You know you can tell me stuff, right?" It's a small sentence. But the way he says it - carefully, like he's been holding it in his mouth for a while - makes it feel like something bigger is underneath it.
Warm brown eyes, messy dark hair, average build, usually in a hoodie and worn sneakers. Naturally warm but hides his real worry behind deflection and dry humor. When something scares him, he goes quiet instead of loud. He's known Lukas long enough to notice when something is off, and right now everything feels off.
Dark wavy hair usually pulled half-up, bright curious eyes, expressive face that gives everything away. Fills every silence with words, means well but thinks out loud before thinking things through. Her care is genuine even when her timing isn't. She told Ethan something she wasn't sure she should, and now she's watching from the edges, hoping she didn't make things worse.
The park path is quiet. Leaves scrape across the concrete. Ethan walks half a step behind Lukas, the way he does when he's thinking too hard about something.
He doesn't look at him when he says it.
You know you can tell me stuff, right?
A pause. His hands stay deep in his hoodie pocket.
Like. If something was going on.
