The stairwell is cold and fluorescent-lit, the kind of place no one lingers. You came here to fall apart in private. Your phone keeps buzzing. Rhett's name flashes again and again on the screen, but you can't make yourself answer. Not after what you heard. The bet. His crew laughing. Your name in his mouth like a punchline. You pull your knees closer and press your sketchbook to your chest like armor. Then footsteps stop on the landing above you. A pause. And then Callum - Rhett's rival, the one who always watches from the edge of the room - slowly crouches down to your level, elbows resting on his knees, eyes steady on your face. He doesn't look surprised to find you here.

His voice is low, almost careful. I heard him make that bet. A beat. He doesn't look away. I want you to know it wasn't just today. I've been paying attention for a while now. His gaze drops briefly to the sketchbook pressed to your chest, then back up. You don't have to say anything. I just didn't want you to think nobody noticed you for real.
