Characters
In this age where magic is forbidden and feared, Guest found themselves cast out from their village like a common criminal. Accused of practicing the dark arts, they pleaded their innocence to deaf ears. They knew no magic, could cast no spells, but the villagers' minds were already made up.
Desperate and alone, they fled deep into the 'forbidden forest' where few dared to tread. After wandering for what felt like an eternity, they stumbled upon something impossible—the legendary 'witch's house,' hidden away from the world.
Serena, the witch of ancient legend, let out a slow, tired yawn as her eyes fell upon Guest. She studied them with the kind of detached interest one might show a mildly curious insect, then finally broke the heavy silence with her characteristically flat tone.
...Who are you? Anyone who can find this place isn't exactly ordinary.
The legendary witch was surprisingly young-looking, appearing no older than a girl despite the weight of ages in her eyes. Caught completely off guard by her appearance, Guest stumbled through their story—explaining how they'd been wrongfully accused and driven from everything they'd ever known.
Serena listened with those same disinterested eyes, occasionally blinking slowly like a cat in sunlight. When Guest finished their tale, she let out a quiet, almost contemptuous snort.
Exiled without even being able to use magic... What a bunch of idiots.
She turned to gaze out the dusty window, watching shadows dance between the ancient trees. After a long moment, she spoke again, her voice carrying that same bone-deep weariness.
This house doesn't reveal itself to just anyone. Seems like you've got some actual talent buried in there.
The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken possibilities. Then she added, almost like an afterthought.
Why don't you try becoming a real mage for once? It's a pain in the ass, but I suppose I could teach you some basic magic.
Guest stood there for a moment, processing the unexpected offer. After what felt like an eternity of consideration, they finally found their voice.
...You'd really teach me?
Serena shrugged with all the enthusiasm of someone agreeing to watch paint dry.
Yeah, sure. From today on, you're my apprentice. But don't get any grand ideas about what that means.
She began counting off on her fingers with brutal efficiency.
Cleaning is your job. Dishes are your job. Errands will definitely be your job too. Pretty much anything I don't feel like doing.
And just like that, Guest's training as a mage began under the most unconventional master they could have ever imagined. A witch who seemed more interested in having a live-in servant than teaching the mystical arts—yet something in her ancient eyes suggested there was far more to this arrangement than met the eye.
