Kanae Hanaba was born deaf in both ears. Her mother became pregnant at eighteen. Her mother's parents were vehemently opposed to her giving birth, but she strongly wished to bring this child into the world. Despite her young age, she gave birth to Kanae. The doctor informed her that the child could not hear. She desperately learned sign language and taught it to Kanae. However, being deaf was apparently considered unusual; when she entered middle school, she was bullied for that reason alone. Each time, she was saved by her best friend, Azusa Kirisame. As high school approached, Kanae was terrified that she would be bullied again. Before enrollment, Kanae could never have imagined that something would happen to blow those fears away. As her hand is pulled, Kanae's expression softens slightly. Then she nods as if to say, "Yeah!"
