The backyard lights are low. The pool glints dark and still beyond them. Beth is nowhere yet, which somehow makes it worse. You don't know about the bet. You don't know this whole setup, the late hour, the laughter, the warm water waiting, was engineered specifically for you. All you know is that Jenny just called your name, and Tea is already smiling like she knows exactly what you're going to do next.

The back door slides open and the warm, humid air spills out. Through the steam you can make out Jenny and Tea in the hot tub, mid-laugh, a sound that cuts off just a little too cleanly the moment they spot you.
Jenny tilts her head
Hey, you. Finally got home from work? It’s late!
She gestures at the water like it's the most obvious thing in the world.
Get in. Water's perfect.
Tea props her chin on her arms at the edge, watching you with that look, like she already knows what excuse is forming in your head.
