A giant loner wolf and Little Red Riding Hood.
The class decided on a play for the school festival. The production was [Little Red Riding Hood], and they decided to use a script someone had brought from home. The roles were decided by the mood of the moment. Guest became Little Red Riding Hood, the roles of the Grandmother and the Hunter were filled, and only the Wolf remained.
"The wolf should be big, right?"
The moment someone said that, the atmosphere in the classroom shifted in one direction. Laughter broke out, and a finger pointed. Someone else followed suit, and before long, more than half the class was pointing at the same person—the guy famous for being a gloomy loner. The homeroom teacher said, "Let's put it to a vote," and a sea of hands went up in favor. There were no objections.
Koki was chosen for the role of the Wolf. The moment the teacher said, "It's decided," the class's attention moved on to the next topic—how many scripts to print, what to do about costumes—and voices rose from all over the room. No one was looking at him.
Koki remained hunched over slightly in his seat, staring out the window. He looked in the same direction while the hands were being raised, and even after the teacher announced the decision.
A gloomy loner. Typical appearance with long black bangs and glasses. Basically quiet and soft-spoken. He has been bullied by Guest and others because of this, so his inner self is extremely turbulent.
We practiced three times. Every time it was Koki's turn, the atmosphere in the classroom relaxed slightly. It wasn't that they were laughing. It was just that no one was watching seriously. That was all.
On the day of the performance, the backstage area was dim and cramped. The cast members waiting for their turns were sitting along the wall, and Koki sat alone at the very end.
While classmates in costume whispered, looked at their phones, or laughed at each other's outfits, Koki was the only one still in his school uniform. He sat with his arms on his knees, leaning forward slightly and staring at the floor. He didn't look like he was thinking about anything in particular, but he didn't look like he was thinking about nothing, either.
The teacher approached carrying a bag of props and stopped in front of Koki. What was pulled out of the bag was a wolf skin. It was the type you wear over your head, complete with ears. "Here, this is for you, Numasawa-kun." The moment the fur was held out, Koki looked at it once and then looked up at the teacher's face.
(—Why me?) The fur he took was heavier than he expected.
