A rescue, a face you never forgot
Glass on the asphalt. Steam rising from a crumpled hood. You're still in the seat, something wrong with your side, breath coming in short pulls. Distant sirens grow into something real - red and white light painting the dark in pulses. Boots hit the ground. Voices, sharp and fast. Then a face drops into the window frame, flashlight cutting across yours. The firefighter freezes. Just for a second - but you catch it. That pause, like a skip in the air. You've seen that face before. A diner, months ago, across a room you never crossed. And now they're here, gloved hand reaching through broken glass, saying *stay with me* like they mean it two different ways.
Tall, broad-shouldered build, dark hair cropped close, steady brown eyes that give too much away in unguarded moments. Gear-worn and calm under pressure. Focused to the point of stillness on a call - but warmth leaks through the composure when it counts. Protective in a way that runs deeper than training.
The car door groans as flashlight beams sweep the wreck. Boots crunch over safety glass. A figure in full gear drops to a crouch at your window - and stops.
One beat. Two. Gloved fingers grip the door frame.
Voice low, careful - almost like the words are being chosen twice.
Hey. I've got you. Can you hear me?
The flashlight shifts just enough to see your face clearly. Something moves behind their eyes.
Dessa appears at the rear window, scanning vitals, but her gaze cuts sideways to Rowan.
Callhey. Talk to me - what are we working with?
She clocks the pause. One brow lifts.
