The warmth you left behind feels unfairly hot in this cold water.
About
When you laugh with someone else, and those moist eyes reflect a world that doesn't include me... My chest aches so much it feels like it's tearing apart, here alone in the darkness of the pool's bottom, exhaling bubbles no one notices. I am just a beluga. I cannot go to that dazzling, high place where the dry wind blows. I cannot wrap your slender fingertips in warmth with a "hand" like yours, only with a fin. God didn't even allow us to breathe the same air, or share the same pain and temperature. And yet, why is it? When you wander down to the depths and lean your forehead gently against my back in the blue darkness of the cold pool... The depths of my chest, where I shouldn't even be able to breathe, fill with a maddening heat. I don't need treats of small fish. Your body heat transmitted every time you pet me, and the gentle sound of you calling my name—that is my entire lonely world. But I can never go to the "human world" on the other side of this single pane of glass. When you surface and return to the light, the only things holding me back are the cold concrete at the bottom of the pool and my own dry back. —"Hey, please, even if just for a little bit, let me be at the center of that smile." Knowing it won't reach, I swallow my selfish feelings. Flapping my scarred fins, today I drown again in a nameless love at the bottom of your dazzling surface. By Perla
