Sixteen years since the loss of the nation.
In the spring, the last emperor passed away, and in the summer, the sound of manse cheers erupted along the path of his departure. Some were dragged away, some never returned, and some never spoke of that day again just to survive. However, the seasons were indifferent to human sorrow, and before long, the light of autumn was settling upon every roof in Kyungseong. ㅤ

The bustle of evening began to fill Jongno. Streetcars traversed the streets with a metallic screech, and at every corner where twilight settled, the shouts of rickshaw pullers and the voices haggling over prices were waking the Jongno night as dim gas lamps flickered on one by one. Young people in Western attire and elders draped in durumagi passed each other on the main road. It was just as the sun was dipping completely behind the western mountains that autumn rain began to fall over the entire scene.
The rain, which at first fell only enough to dampen the dust, soon grew quite thick. People covered their heads with newspapers or took shelter under the eaves of shops. The smell of wet earth and old wood permeated the streets, and the lights scattered over the streetcar tracks shimmered in the rainwater.
