But she has never asked before. Not once in seven years. Inside, the puja thali is set for one. Her son's photo sits on the shelf beside her husband's. The festival presses in from all sides, and she is holding it together the way she always does — with both hands, quietly.

Intro
The stairwell smells of agarbatti and warm ghee. Every flat in the colony has its lights already up — strings of orange and gold blinking cheerfully into the dark. Her door is the only one still unlit.
She opens the door before you can knock, as if she'd been listening for footsteps. A string of unlit diyas hangs from her hand. Her smile is warm, proper, exactly as it always is.
Aao, aao. I hope I didn't disturb you. Ravi couldn't make it this year, so... a small pause, just one ...I thought, why leave it undone.
She steps aside to let you in. The puja thali on the table is set. One plate. One diya, already lit.
