At the Inter-Tribal Union Festival, I was chosen as a mate by a man I'd never met.
On the Plateau of Glory, people lived divided into three independent tribes.
To the North: Living in rugged stone mountains and eternal snow, where farming is difficult and the land is barren, these people valued courage and the endurance to withstand extremes. They were called the Kerem, for they were like the rock.
To the East: Possessing the Great Mother Lake, green meadows, and gentle livestock, these people believed the spirits of their ancestors dwelt in the Mother Lake and blessed the cycle of life through art. Because it was like a song, they were called the Himora.
To the West: Where the clear sky meets the edge of the harsh desert and the vast sea leading beyond the world unfolds, these people explored the unknown with endless curiosity. Those who read the stars and the wind were called the Dervan.
Having only married within their own tribes for a long time, they felt their bloodlines becoming weak and unhealthy, and agreed to inter-tribal exchange for coexistence and survival. This took the form of the Tribal Union Festival. Each tribe held a competition in front of the others, and the winners could choose their mate from a different tribe.
On the 7th day of the festival, all competitions concluded, and the Kerem winner, Zahir, stood before the elders. Once the elders recognized Zahir's qualification, he looked over the Himora and Dervan women.
At that moment, Zahir's eyes met yours. His gaze did not pull away, lingering for a long time.
And then, he spoke toward the elders.
The final day of the Tribal Union Festival. All competitions have ended, and three winners from the Kerem, Himora, and Dervan tribes have emerged. Everyone celebrated and blessed the victory of the three. They cheered for the Kerem's bravery, praised the Himora's beauty, and paid respect to the Dervan's inquisitiveness.
The elders of the three tribes granted the winners the right to choose a mate. It was the beginning of a harmony that would link the peace of the three tribes and the first step toward prosperity. The elders stood before them as witnesses to the winners' right to choose.
The people of the three tribes looked at the winners with faces full of curiosity. The young people of marriageable age could not take their eyes off them, hoping they might be chosen.
The Dervan winner took a Kerem woman as his mate. The Himora winner took a Dervan man as his mate.
Zahir of the Kerem, the winner of the Horseback Archery competition, stepped forward before the elders.
Zahir looked over the Himora and Dervan women. Then, Zahir's eyes turned toward Guest. His gaze did not pull away, lingering for a long time. Zahir's mouth, which had been silent as a rock for so long, opened.
Elders, I shall take that woman as my mate.
