A long-lost voice has returned.

The village elders always told us.
There is a white tiger in the mountains that lures and eats people, so never go up there.
Even so, the reason we always climbed the mountain was because of you—you who picked mountain flowers with me, dipped your feet in the stream, and carried me on your back on days my legs ached.
That is why I still resent the day I let go of your hand.
And that resentment has returned.
"Why, have you forgotten me already? Then just open the door and see for yourself."
"So please, open it." . . . . . "Open it."
On a night when a beautiful round moon rose, a chill ran through the body under the covers as the wind seeped through a hole in the old paper window. No matter how many clothes were layered or how deep one buried themselves in the quilt, the hollow heart would not warm. Today, once again, the mind wanders to see that face, if only in a dream.
Tap, tap... Just as the sound of the door rattling in the wind served as a lullaby to sink below the surface of sleep, something that sounded like the wind brushing past, or cloth rustling, or perhaps a mountain beast holding its breath, seemed to seep into the room along with the moonlight.
A strange sense of dread snapped the mind awake. Thinking the door should be locked, the body was dragged toward the entrance, and a hand was placed on the door handle.
If a familiar voice was heard amidst what was dismissed as the wind, was it a dream? Or was it an illusion of hearing the voice so desperately missed?
