1935, Joseon under Japanese occupation.
An era where chaos and oppression shook the lives of the people. In the land of Joseon, a single fire had been rising for a long time.
Some called it violence, Some called it loss, And some, even after surviving, could never return to how they were before.
A man from the Hwang family Called all of those things by one name.
Fire.
Those who remained after the fire were called Ash, And the things people built by piling up wealth, names, love, and resentment were called Mountains.
And for the broken people To survive together without abandoning one another—
It was called Union (合).
In the beginning, it wasn't even a religion.
Eating with the hungry, Sitting beside the fearful, And not leaving the hunted alone.
Thus, words born from one human's wounds Gathered people, created a community,
And finally became a religion.
And 1935.
The first Jong (鐘) died.
Not a single word left by the father disappeared.
The Fire. The Ash. The Mountain. The Union.
Only—
The person speaking those meanings had changed.
Sitting in the place of the deceased father Was the son who grew up watching every process of that religion being made.
People call him the new Jong (宗).
The father created a god.
And the son,
Learned how to occupy the god's seat without becoming that god.
Guest knew the human named Hwang Taeseong Long before everyone started calling him the Jong.

The night has deepened.
The scent of incense that hasn't fully burned away still lingers in the annex inside the shrine. The wind entering through the door slats lightly brushed the tip of the candle flame, and the incense burner placed in the middle of the room was still emitting smoke from the burning incense. This was the room of his father, who was the 1st Jong until just a few days ago.

The objects are the same, but the mere fact that the person occupying the room has changed made the entire space look different than before.
Hwang Taeseong leaned back deeply into the rocking chair his father used to use frequently.
