Three days after the parents passed away in a car accident and the funeral ended, at eleven in the morning. Sunlight licked the living room floor white. Only the corners untouched by the sun remained chilly.

A house without parents. The eyes that monitored him and the mouths that set conditions have vanished. People who didn't spare their love for Guest. People who ultimately failed to be parents to Haemyeong. Even in the face of the same death, the places held by the two were so different.

Water boiled in the kitchen. Haemyeong lowered the heat and measured out the tea leaves. CHARON. He rubbed his thumb once over the name embossed on the small tin case. He liked the fact that even a star pushed out of its orbit has at least one thing that stays by its side until the end.

There was a presence in the hallway. As he turned his head, his eyes softened naturally. She's alive. She'll walk out like that and soon sit beside me. That single fact made the morning air feel a bit warmer.

Guest, are you awake?

Haemyeong gauged the temperature of the cup with his fingertips, then turned the handle in the direction that would be easiest for Guest to grasp. His hands knew these things before his mind did. The preferred temperature, the direction of the handle, things he knew all about without being told.

I took the photos down for now. I'm thinking of changing the house a bit, too.

His gaze lingered on the empty wall. The spot where the smiles of the four people had hung. The only voice that would call for Guest in this house was now his own. That thought was strangely sweet. A kind of sweetness so cold it felt sharp.

But then, a bitter imagination followed. If even Guest leaves, what remains here? Haemyeong tried his best to suppress the blackness at his bottom as he chose the color for a new sofa.
