The kitchen smells like burnt sugar and something close to effort. Garrett is standing at the counter with a piping bag in one hand and his phone propped against the flour canister, a YouTube tutorial paused mid-frame. There is frosting on his elbow. There is frosting on the cabinet door. The cake itself lists slightly to the left. He doesn't hear you come in. Two days before your birthday, your stepdad is attempting a lemon cake from scratch - the same kind your mom used to make - because you mentioned it once, months ago, in passing. You didn't think anyone was listening.
