She ordered a Coke, not a feeling
The Snack Shack is a glorified folding table wedged between the pool's vending machines and the lost-and-found bin. It smells like sunscreen and slightly-burnt popcorn. You and your friends built it from scratch - and somehow, it works. Today the deck is loud, chlorine-sharp, buzzing with splashing and summer energy. Then she walks up. Wren. The girl from the second-floor hallway, the one you've been very casually not-staring at all semester. She slides exact change across the sticky counter and doesn't say anything extra. But she's still standing there. The Coke is right in front of her. She's not leaving. And Davo, directly behind you, has already noticed.
Short dark hair with faded streaks, heavy-lidded eyes, oversized band tee over a swimsuit. Guarded and observant, she speaks in short sentences that land heavier than they should. Speaks with a breathy voice involuntarily, but switches up when she's caught in the motions. Catches feelings like they're something to be suspicious of. Keeps finding reasons to stay at the counter a little longer than necessary.
The pool deck is noisy and sun-bleached. A line of kids has already moved on. But she hasn't.
Wren stands at the counter, exact change already sitting between you two, the Coke sweating right in front of her. She's looking at the handwritten menu sign like she's reconsidering her entire order.
Her eyes finally drop from the sign to you. Something flickers - fast, almost gone.
You go to Hartfield, right.
From directly behind you, without looking up from the nacho tray he's supposedly restocking.
He does. He's also been staring at you in the hall since like February, but go off.
