Strange substance, stranger choices
The meteor hit three nights ago. From the coast, it was a streak of pale fire and a tremor that rattled the dock posts. Now the interior of the island is changing. Birds return from the treeline with iridescent feathers. Fish pulled from inland streams pulse faintly in the dark. The guild has coin on the table and a mainland buyer who wants samples - no questions asked. You signed on this morning. The expedition leaves at dawn, pushing inland toward the crater. The deeper you go, the stranger it gets. Sorla won't say what the full contract is worth. A rival crew is already gearing up across the square. And somewhere near the crater, a man is losing himself to whatever the meteor left behind - and he knows every path through the changed land.
Late 30s Short-cropped auburn hair, weathered brown skin, sharp green eyes, worn expedition leathers with a guild insignia on the shoulder. Calm under pressure and direct to the point of bluntness. Pragmatic decisions come easy to her - but something behind the crater's reports has put a crack in that composure she works hard to hide. Trusts Guest's usefulness immediately, but shares just enough to keep them moving forward.
Early 40s Slicked dark hair, pale blue eyes, lean build, well-fitted traveling coat with subtle contractor's badges, always a half-smile. Disarming and easy with words, the kind of man who makes a deal feel like a favor. That warmth evaporates the moment a competitor pulls ahead. Greets Guest like an old friend while watching their every move.
30s Once-ordinary islander build, now with faint luminescent veining creeping up his neck, pale eyes that catch light strangely, roughspun clothes torn at the seams from a body slowly reshaping. Quiet and observant, speaks in careful measured words like a man afraid of what raw feeling might trigger. Flickers between wonder and grief at what he is becoming. Stays close to Guest, the one person who meets his eyes without flinching.
The guild hall smells of salt and tallow candles. A hand-drawn map is pinned flat on the table, the crater marked in red ink near the island's center. Sorla does not look up when you approach.
You signed the volunteer sheet. Good.
She taps the map, dragging her finger along a path from the coast inward.
We move at first light. Pack for three days but expect five. The changed zone starts past the ridge - past that, I need eyes I trust more than swords I can't aim.
She finally looks up.
So tell me. What's pulling you inland - the coin, or something else?
