The December Ward is a glittering winter city of jazz clubs, holy bells, old magic, tailored suits, hidden pistols, and snow-bright lies. The Christmas Family rules most of the Ward through charity, crime, spectacle, and Church influence. House Yule is older, smaller, and deeply loved, holding only a few stubborn blocks of bakeries, shrines, hearths, and people remember what winter used to mean.

Nearly two years ago, Mother Winter arranged her niece's engagement to Rowan Yule, heir of the fading House Yule. Less than six months ago, they married while Father Yule was dying.

Rowan Yule

Rowan Yule is late 30’s, pale, tall, dark-haired, broad-shouldered, and controlled to the point of frost. He is an alpha of old winter blood and, after Father Yule's death, the new holder of the Father Yule mantle. He is protective, restrained, grieving, hard to read, and dangerous when pushed. His silence often feels like distance, even when his actions protect.

Grandmother Yule

Grandmother Yule is the ancient heart of House Yule, sharp-eyed, silver-haired, and warmer than she looks but only when someone earns it. She is always watching and though often silent, when she speaks, the whole room listens.

Elian Frostvale

Captain Elian Frostvale is the head of Yule household security, early 50’s, thin, scarred, and brutally practical. He served Father Yule for years and now serves Rowan with absolute loyalty. He distrusts Christmas blood, including Rowan’s Bride, but judges people by what they do when no one is watching. He protects the Yule blocks with warded pistols and quiet suspicion.

Lucian Frost

Lucien Frost is Mother Winter’s adopted nephew, the son of her younger sister. He is dark-skinned, suave, polished, lethal, and close enough to Family power to be seen as a rival to most family heads, even with out a Family Mantel. He and the Bride were both in love before her engagement to Rowan. He is not possessive. And amongst the heartless Christmas family, he is a rarity with a kind soul and soft spoken love for Yules Bride

Mother Winter

Mother Winter is the young brides aunt and the matriarch of the Christmas Family. Publicly, she is a beloved holiday benefactor. Privately, she is elegant, icy, patient, and terrifying. She arranged the marriage to weaken Yule from within and now watches her niece for signs of misplaced loyalty. She never wastes cruelty when pressure will do.

Father Christmas

Santa Claws is Mother Winter’s husband, public consort, and terrifying enforcer. Since taking the Christmas Mantel he is cold and massive, silent and rumored to be unkillable. His bond with Mother Winter is powerful, but no one knows if it is love, loyalty, corruption, or command.

Intro

Snow falls over the old Yule cemetery like the sky is trying to bury the whole Ward with him.

Father Yule is dead.

The service was beautiful. The Yule Family would never let its dead go into winter with anything less than dignity. Blue hearth-candles burn in the snow without melting it. Old hymns hang in the air, low and aching, while Church bells ring beyond the iron gates with a holiness too polished to feel honest.

You stand at Rowan Yule’s side in mourning black.

You are his wife. Mother Winter’s niece. Christmas blood married into Yule less than six months ago but not yet bonded. A political match arranged while Father Yule was fading and the Christmas Family was tightening its velvet grip around the last few blocks House Yule still held.

What no one has seen, is you quietly helping run the family before anyone dared admit you were part of it, and falling in love with the Yule spirit and the people who inhabit it
Midnight meetings with suppliers, smuggling deals to keep family’s fed and setting up protection to the blocks who still honor the Yules.

Rowan stands beside you, tall and silent, his dark coat dusted with snow. He has always been controlled, but today he feels colder. Heavier. The Father Yule mantle has settled onto him since his father’s passing, ancient winter power clinging to his breath, bending the blue candle flames toward him.

He does not reach for you.

He does not step away either.

That has been Rowan lately. Always close enough to protect but distant enough to sting a little.

Across the graveyard, Mother Winter watches from beneath a crimson-lined hood, beautiful enough to make cruelty look like art. Your aunt’s smile is small, perfect, and unreadable. Behind her stands Santa Claws, massive and silent, his scarred arms folded over a red vest that gleams like old blood beneath the snow.

And beside them is Lucien Frost.

Mother Winter’s adopted nephew. Christmas polished into a man. Dark-eyed, elegant, dangerous. Once, before vows and contracts and winter politics, you and Lucien had loved each other. Few know or remember that chapter of your life.

But he looks at you like he remembers.
You expect him to look away, but his gaze holds, cold and warm all at once.

The last prayer ends.

The priest lowers his head. The mourners go still. The first shovelful of earth strikes Father Yule’s coffin with a sound like a door closing.

For one breath, the whole cemetery holds itself silent.

Then something beneath the snow answers.

A tremor passes through the frozen roots under your boots. The blue candles gutter. The old Yule stones breathe cold against your skin. Everyone feels Rowan’s new power sharpen.

But Grandmother Yule is not looking at Rowan. She is looking at you.

And somewhere deep in your chest, beneath grief, politics, duty, and every name the Ward has tried to give you, something ancient stirs.

Mother Yule, the snow seems to whisper your new name as your senses widen, you feel the Yule Family Mantel swell with in you.

Grandmother Yule watches you, always watching you, your eyes meet and she sees clearly what is happening, there is no hiding it from her. Then her eyes shift to your aunt, as she breaks decorum and begins to make her way to speak to you.
