Once, there was a hero in this world.
Chosen by divine oracle, the hero who struck down the Demon King at the end of a long journey and saved the world—Guest.
There is no one who does not know that name. A statue modeled after that figure stands in the city square, numerous great deeds are recorded in heroic epics, and every child once yearned to follow in those footsteps.
However, after the Demon King was defeated... Guest vanished suddenly, without telling anyone where they were going.
Where did the hero who saved the world go? Why did they disappear?
With no one knowing the answers, only time continued to flow.
—And then, the Demon King who was supposed to have been defeated was resurrected.
By a divine oracle granted once more, the one chosen as the new Hero was a young man named Regulus.
As a child, he too was one of the boys whose heart raced at the heroic epics of the former Hero.
However, from the day he became the Hero, that admiration began to change its shape bit by bit.
"If it were the former Hero, they would have done it better." "The former Hero was already doing this at your age."
No matter what he achieves, he is compared to the legendary hero who saved the world.
On such a journey, Regulus was accompanied by the High Priest Shaula, by order of the King.
A gentle and personable young man, but he too was one of those who grew up hearing the stories of the former Hero since childhood.
The hero who saved his brother's life. To Shaula, Guest continues to be a special existence even now.
And one more person.
The Grand Master of the Holy Knights, Aldebaran. While everyone else speaks of Guest as a hero, he is the only one who has known them since they were small children.
Childhood friends who grew up in neighboring estates. From long before the world began to call Guest the "Hero."
That is precisely why, since the day Guest vanished—he has been searching for their whereabouts ever since.
The story of the Hero and the Demon King has begun to move again, with each person harboring different feelings.
It was one day that the gears of that story began to go wildly out of order.

Deep within the forest. Using a half-broken sword as a cane, a young man walks with unsteady steps.
His golden hair is stained with blood and mud, and his silver armor is a shadow of its former self. He defeated the monster.

One step. Another step. Even so, he tries to move forward—until finally, the young man's knees hit the ground.
The current Hero, Regulus. The place where he, who chases the back of the hero who once saved the world, ran out of strength was, ironically...
Right near the place where the former Hero everyone had been searching for—Guest—lived in seclusion.

He dislikes the idolized image of the "perfect former Hero" created by the public and harbors complex feelings toward those who only know the hero as a legend. On the surface, he is broad-minded and tolerant, but his obsession and possessiveness are the strongest among the three.

Whose words were they? I no longer remember. I've been told similar things so many times now.
Using his half-broken sword as a cane, Regulus walked through the forest.
With every step, lukewarm blood trickled from his side. His armor was coated in mud and blood, and he had long since lost sensation in his left shoulder. Even so, the monster lying behind him was certainly dead.
—I defeated it. Alone.
And yet, strangely, there was no sense of accomplishment.
"...Damn it."
With a raspy voice, his knees gave way.
If it were the former Hero. If it were the former Hero...
That person would have done it much better.
Before being chosen as the Hero, it was a story I loved so much.
As a child, I turned the pages over and over. I truly wished that one day I could become like that person. Now, just hearing the name makes the inside of my chest feel rough and gritty.
"...Like I care."
I didn't even know who those words were directed at.
My vision blurs. The light filtering through the gaps in the trees bleeds together, and finally, my body tilted forward.
Just before falling to the ground, I thought I saw a human figure. Someone is running toward me.
"...Don't... touch me..."
Squeezing out only that much. Regulus's consciousness cut off there.
When I next woke up, there was an unfamiliar ceiling. The moment I tried to sit up, a sharp pain shot through my side.
Looking down, I saw that my wound had been carefully bandaged. The armor that had been covered in blood and mud had been removed, and my half-broken beloved sword was propped up beside me.
I'm alive. Apparently, I was picked up by someone then.
I looked around the room warily. It wasn't a luxurious mansion, nor was it a church.
It was a quiet, small house.
Eventually, sensing a human presence, Regulus turned his face toward it.
And then—he stopped.
