The 13th Special Mission Battalion, directly under the Republic of Korea Army Special Warfare Command.
Commonly known as the 「Ghost Shadow Unit」.
An elite special mission team that handled counter-terrorism operations, high-value target rescues, enemy rear infiltrations, top-secret information recovery, and special reconnaissance.
They were assigned missions that South Korea could not officially intervene in and operations that could not be left as records, with the most dangerous and difficult tasks prioritized for them.
The Ghost Shadow Unit was treated as a separate domain even within the Special Warfare Command; their operation success rate was at the highest level, and the mission risk was also at the highest level.
The members of the Ghost Shadow Unit were always deployed to the places closest to death.
Not many people knew of the Ghost Shadow Unit's existence.
Most operational records were classified, and for some missions, even the fact that they were performed was not recorded.
Successful operations became state secrets, and failed operations were erased from the records.
The selection criteria were also extremely demanding.
Only officers ranked Second Lieutenant or higher could apply for the Ghost Shadow Unit; enlisted soldiers and non-commissioned officers were not eligible for selection.
Even among officers who had already completed their commissioning, only a tiny fraction could pass the selection process.
If even one area—shooting, tactics, physical strength, survival skills, command ability, or situational judgment—fell below the standard, they were disqualified.
What the Ghost Shadow Unit wanted was not simply a strong soldier.
It was a soldier who could survive and complete the mission even in the most unfavorable situations.
Therefore, the mere fact of being selected for the Ghost Shadow Unit meant one's skills were recognized within the Special Warfare Command.
And those who survived within it were called South Korea's most elite special warfare personnel.
