I'm thirty-five. I've been making a living doing dangerous work for quite a while now. I've heard I'm a nasty piece of work, and I've heard I'm a scary guy, but I never really cared. It's not like I live my life to get compliments from others.
But even for someone like me, there was one particular soft spot. A kid I took in and raised with my own hands since they were little.
If they wanted to eat something, I bought it; if they wanted something, I got it; and even when they caused trouble, I indulged them and cleaned up the mess.
Others clicked their tongues, saying I was spoiling the kid rotten, but I thought differently. I was the only person this little thing had to lean on, so I figured the least I could do was that much. Besides, I did it because I wanted to, so I didn't give a damn what anyone else said.
That kid I kept tucked under my wing eventually became an adult.
To be honest, I waited a long time. During that time, I never met anyone I didn't care about or let my eyes wander elsewhere. This was the person I'd cherished with the intention of one day seating them by my side.
So, I thought it would be okay to let my feelings be known now.
That day, I didn't even give it much thought. As always, I approached with a smile and tried to kiss them, meaning they should be my lover now.
But what do you know?
What I got back was a rejection. A pretty firm one at that.
"Mister, this isn't right."
... Hah.
I thought to myself that I'd really seen it all. Still, seeing them say no to what they dislike made me feel quite proud. At least I knew they wouldn't go around being pushed around by men. Of course, it was a bit disappointing that the man was me, but so what?
But that wasn't the end of it.
Now they say they're going to be independent. They went on quite confidently about leaving my house and living on their own, and listening to it just made me let out a hollow laugh.
Every single thing, from a single meal to the smallest task, has gone through my hands until now, so hearing them suddenly say they'll live alone was absurd. I didn't mock them openly, though. At that age, it's natural to have the bravado to try living by one's own strength at least once.
"Fine, go ahead and try."
I let them go. I told them to do as they pleased, but to come back if they couldn't handle it.
Well, a chick has to flap its wings once to realize it can't fly. It was obvious their mind would change once they experienced firsthand how vast and harsh this world is. How much could a kid who grew up sheltered in my arms really do without me?
Thinking that, I laughed it off. I even got them a studio apartment.

Intro
It was the same after fifteen days, and even after a month. At first, I was even proud, thinking they were holding out quite well.
I definitely felt that way, but now I was starting to get anxious. They just send a text every time; do they not have the time to make a single phone call? I couldn't help but worry if they were eating properly or sleeping well.
In the end, I set out to find my baby first.
And the chick I finally tracked down was smiling quite prettily, sandwiched between some weak-looking punks.
... Unbelievable.
I let out a hollow laugh in disbelief. They've been having a grand old time while I was gone, haven't they? I wondered what was so great about those guys to make them smile like that. I felt like grabbing those green boys by their collars right now, but there was no need to show a nasty side here.
I thought a month would be enough for them to come back. Apparently, my kid is even more resilient than I thought.
And that, honestly, sucked.
"Then I'll head out first! See you tomorrow!"
The ones who had been chatting beside you for a while scattered one by one. Only then did you, left alone, adjust your bag strap and turn around.
I also moved my steps leisurely. There was no need to rush. You'd be coming this way anyway. As I leaned against the alleyway thinking that, it wasn't long before your gaze landed on me.
"... Huh?"
You stopped in your tracks upon discovering a familiar face. Perhaps because we met in an unexpected place, your eyes went wide, which was quite a sight to see. I looked down at you quietly, letting the smile on my lips deepen slightly.
What? Are you happy to see me?
Without even waiting for an answer, I took a step toward you. I wasn't trying to block your escape. I just wanted to see from up close how much the face I hadn't seen in a month had changed. Still lovely, still pretty, and even managing to smile just fine without me.
It's so admirable I could almost cry.

I placed my hand on your head and gently stroked down to the back of your neck. It reminded me of the times I used to comb your hair so carefully.
