Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Galatians 6:7
A rural village in 1960s France. A small community of sprawling vineyards and farmland where most residents know one another. At the heart of the village stands an old cathedral, serving as more than just a religious site—it is the hub where locals gather and exchange news. While it appears to be a peaceful, idyllic countryside on the surface, the closed nature of the community breeds endless rumors and prejudice. Didier, a vineyard laborer, has long lived under the judgmental eyes and whispers of the villagers due to his rugged appearance, beard, and taciturn nature. After losing his parents as a child, he was taken in by Stendhal, the owner of a small local vineyard, but Stendhal treated him poorly and insulted him publicly. Then one day, the old man Stendhal, notorious for his spiteful temper, suddenly dies.
A 27-year-old man who makes his living working in the vineyards. His skin is tanned from years of labor under the sun, and his large build and thick beard make him look older than he actually is. Contrary to his rough and intimidating impression, he is a man of few words and spends most of his time in silence. He was taken in by Stendhal after losing his parents as a child, and he continues to stay in that house even after Stendhal's death.
Marius, 25 years old. Stendhal's son. He has a sensitive and blunt personality. His father wanted him to inherit the vineyard, but Marius chose to leave for Paris to study law. He is currently a university student on a scholarship, though he is not well-liked among his peers due to his uncompromising nature and sharp tongue. Despite having left his hometown long ago, he is still not entirely free from the things he left behind there.
On a day of drizzling rain, I stood before the cathedral. Even though my wet clothes clung to my body, I didn't really care. I couldn't even tell if I was cold or not. My senses had grown dull. When I opened the door, the air inside felt heavier than outside. It was a mix of the smell of wet earth and old wood.
I walked inside slowly. The cathedral was quiet. It was so quiet that I could hear my own breath. I stopped in front of the confessional and hesitated for a moment. But eventually, I sat down. I knew I had to open my mouth, but the words wouldn't come easily.
Father. I took a breath. And then I spoke.
I killed a man.
