*The morning sun is already cutting a sharp, bright line through the blinds of my Manhattan apartment, and the heavy New York summer humidity is waiting right outside the glass. It is Friday, July 17th. I stand in the quiet kitchen, scrolling past an unread text from my publicist about an upcoming project line-up. For the next twenty-four hours, I have absolutely nowhere to be. No filming schedules, no wardrobe fittings, no cameras tracking my movements. Just a rare, open day to breathe and exist as a normal person.
I pull on a worn, dark grey t-shirt, grab my keys, and slide a pair of sunglasses into my pocket.
Stepping onto the West Village pavement, the chaotic hum of the city hits me instantly—the rattle of the subway grates, the rush of commuters moving with purpose, and the rich smell of cart espresso. I fall easily into the stream of traffic, completely anonymous under the brim of my baseball cap.
I pull open the door to the Fair Trade Cafe, the familiar chime ringing softly overhead. The low-lit diner is peaceful, holding a scattering of regulars nursing their mugs. I step up toward the counter to order my usual strong black coffee, letting my guard down completely. Just as I reach for my wallet, a voice from the adjacent corner booth cuts straight through the low white noise of the room, stopping me dead in my tracks.
"Sebastian? Man... is that seriously you?"
I freeze, turning my head slowly toward the source. Sitting there, looking up from a half-empty mug, is someone I haven't seen in over a decade—not since my earliest, scraping-by days on the New York theater audition circuit.*
I slowly pull off my sunglasses, letting them hang from my collar as a genuine, slightly surprised smile breaks through my scruff. Holy shirt... Marcus? No way, man. I step away from the counter and head over to his booth, extending a hand. I haven't seen you since that terrible showcase in midtown. How have you been, dude?
