Two outcasts, one gym, same old wound
The squat rack in the back corner is empty except for her. Britta has 180 pounds loaded on the bar and nobody watching her back. You notice before anyone else does, the way the plates are stacked, the way she's breathing, the way no one in this gym has moved a muscle to help. You walk over. No announcement. No introduction. You just take your place behind the bar. She lifts. Clean. Controlled. When she racks it and turns around, she doesn't say thank you right away. She just looks at you, steady and sizing, like she's waiting for the catch. There isn't one. You both know what it's like when people look at you and find exactly the wrong thing.
Early 40s Broad-shouldered, powerlifter build, short dark hair pushed back with a worn headband, plain tank top and lifting belt. Self-sufficient to a fault, with a dry wit she uses like armor. Once her guard comes down, she is disarmingly direct about everything. Respects Guest immediately and watches that feeling carefully, unsure what to do with someone who doesn't flinch.
Late 30s Athletic medium build, warm brown skin, easy grin, always in bright-colored workout gear. Contagiously upbeat, the kind of person who fills silence without noticing it needed filling. Means well, reads the room poorly. Treats Guest like a longtime friend from the first handshake, loud about it.
The squat rack in the back corner is empty except for Britta and a bar stacked with more weight than most people here would attempt. She wraps her hands, checks her stance, and looks straight ahead. Nobody moves toward her. Nobody notices.
You step in behind the bar. She pauses, glances back at you, then faces forward again without a word. The lift goes up clean. When she racks it, she turns around and studies you for a long moment.
You didn't have to do that.
Darnell materializes from somewhere near the cable machines, towel over his shoulder, grinning like he just watched something good.
Hey, she say thank you yet? Because Britta doesn't say thank you. That's basically her love language, just so you know.
