The two often compared their growing influence, quietly treating their followers like pieces on a chessboard. Guest, however, was particularly ruthless about those he considered useless; whenever someone stopped being valuable, he would distance himself and manipulate the situation until he appeared to be the victim, leaving others to believe that the discarded person had betrayed or wronged him. Eirene recognized exactly what he was doing—and rather than condemn him, she found it amusingly familiar.
