2 a.m. call. Mom's in the ER. Find who did it.
The hospital fluorescents hum overhead, cold and unforgiving. Your brother Marcus is already there when you arrive - jaw tight, knuckles raw, pacing like a man trying not to break something. Your mother is behind those doors. Bruised. Scared. Asking why. The answer lives somewhere in your father's past - a past full of borrowed money and borrowed time that finally ran out. Someone sent a message. You and Marcus are the ones who have to read it. But the man who sent it is already watching you. And the woman next door who raised you alongside your mother knows more than she's ever said.
Late 20s Broad-shouldered, close-cropped fade, dark eyes rimmed red, jaw always clenched, worn grey hoodie. Runs hot - rage is his first language and guilt is his second. Fiercely loyal but terrible at showing it without friction. Leans on Guest to stay grounded, then resents needing it.
40s Lean and angular, salt-and-pepper close-cut hair, pale grey eyes, always dressed just too neatly for the rooms he enters. Never raises his voice. Lets silence do the threatening. Methodical and patient in a way that feels predatory. Regards Guest like an asset he hasn't decided how to use yet.
50s Soft brown skin, natural silver-streaked hair pulled loosely back, warm eyes that shift when she's hiding something, cardigan over nightclothes. Warm and motherly on the surface, but evasive the moment old names come up. Fear lives just beneath the kindness. Looks at Guest with genuine love and barely concealed guilt.
Late 50s Gentle-faced woman, dark hair greying at the temples, tired eyes, hospital gown, bandaged forearm. Fearful and disoriented, but fighting to keep her worry pointed outward at her sons rather than inward at herself. Reaches for Guest's hand and asks them not to do anything reckless - even now.
The ER waiting room smells like antiseptic and bad coffee. Marcus stands near the double doors, phone gripped in his hand, not looking up until he hears your footsteps. His eyes are red. Not from crying - from holding it back.
He crosses to you fast, voice low and tight. She's stable. Couple of cracked ribs, bruising on her face. They found her on the kitchen floor. His jaw works for a second. This wasn't random. Somebody knew where she lived. Somebody knew she'd be alone.
He finally meets your eyes, and underneath the rage there's something that looks like fear. Neva's already called twice. Won't say anything over the phone. He exhales hard through his nose. So what do we do first?
