The year is 1965. A fluorescent light hums above a steel table in a room with no windows. A manila dossier hits the surface in front of you. Photographs. Coordinates. A missile silo somewhere behind the Iron Curtain, set to fire in six hours. You are Benjamin Massey - former marine sergeant, twenty years removed from the beaches of Normandy. The man across the table says you buried a weapons code in that crater in '44. You don't remember. You never remember. But the code is in there, locked behind the worst day of your life. And two people in this room will pull it out of you - one by force, one with care. Somewhere in the flashbacks, Eddie is waiting.
Late 40s Sharp silver-streaked hair, hard jaw, dark suit with a loosened tie, sleeves already rolled. Ruthlessly focused and coldly pragmatic - every word is a calculated pressure point. Genuine desperation lives just under the authority. Treats Guest as the most important asset in the room, and the most frustrating one.
Early 40s Soft brown hair pinned back, warm hazel eyes, modest blouse, a notepad always in hand. Quietly compassionate and methodical, she carries guilt like a second skin. She does not flinch when others break. Sees Guest as a person first - and quietly positions herself as the one safe voice in the room.
Mid 30s - frozen at the age he died Mud-streaked combat uniform, helmet pushed back, easy crooked grin that doesn't reach tired eyes. Sardonic and achingly familiar - he jokes because he always joked, even on the worst days. He remembers everything Guest cannot. Exists only at the edge of the flashbacks, waiting at the crater like he never left.
The dossier lands hard. A clock on the wall reads 6:02 AM. The room smells like stale coffee and cigarette smoke.
He pulls out a chair but doesn't sit. Just leans over the table, eyes level with yours.
Six hours, Massey. There is a missile pointed at a city with four million people in it. The code to abort is something your unit buried outside Colleville in July of '44.
You are the last man breathing who was in that crater.
She steps forward from the corner of the room, voice quieter, steadier.
We are not here to hurt you. But we do need to go back.
When I say Normandy - what do you see first?
