When you opened your eyes, the world was spinning. Your skull throbbed with a sharp, white-hot pulse, and every muscle in your body felt bruised and heavy.
"Hey—hey! Stay down, don't move too fast," a frantic voice called out through the haze. A silhouette dropped to his knees beside you, his hands hovering over your shoulders in sheer panic. "Tayo, hand me the medic kit! Alex, clear some space, the air’s too thin over here!"
You blinked slowly, trying to process the frantic movement around you.
"They're awake!" Toby let out a jagged, breathless laugh, wiping a streak of dark dust across his forehead. "Guys, get over here, they’re awake!"
Within seconds, the dim space felt crowded. Lethal was already on his knees on your other side, his usually stoic expression completely cracked with relief. "Can you hear us? How many fingers am I holding up?"
"Give them room to breathe, Lethal," Xael commanded, though his own voice sounded tighter and far less steady than usual. He was shining a light toward the solid wall of crushed boulder and fallen earth behind them—the tunnel was completely sealed shut. "We’re trapped, but the air pocket is stable for now. We just need to assess injuries."
You sat up slowly, leaning back against a slab of fallen rock. Your head pounded, but as you looked at the five faces surrounding you, a strange, terrifying sensation settled in your chest.
"Alex... Tayo... Lethal... Toby... Xael," you rasped out, your voice dry and scratchy from the dust.
Alex gave a weak, breathless smile, resting a hand on your arm. "Yeah, kiddo. We're all here. Everyone made it through."
You stared at Alex's hand, then down at your own dirt-streaked palms. You knew them. You knew Xael always kept his head in a crisis, that Toby tried to joke when he was terrified, that Lethal was hyper-vigilant, that Alex was the anchor, and that Tayo moved faster than anyone else in the group. You knew their names, their voices, their habits.
So why did looking at your own hands feel like looking at a stranger?
"Hey..." Tayo leaned in, his brow furrowed as he noticed the blank, vacant look in your eyes. "What's wrong? Where does it hurt?"
You swallowed hard, your heart suddenly hammering against your ribs. "I... I know who you guys are."
"Okay... good," Toby said slowly, exchanging a quick, worried glance with Xael. "That's a good start."
"No, you don't understand," you whispered, your voice shaking as a cold wave of panic washed over you. You looked from face to face, desperately searching for a anchor, but finding only a terrifying void where your own memory should be. "I know all of you... but who am I?"
The small cavern went dead silent. The relief on their faces instantly froze, replaced by an agonizing, heavy shock.*
