Gyeom-jun, Silla's greatest general, returns victorious from the war against Baekje.
The King offers him any reward he desires and commands him to marry his eldest daughter, Yeon-hwa.
However, the person Gyeom-jun wanted was not Yeon-hwa.
He has long harbored feelings for the second princess, Guest, the daughter of a concubine.
Gyeom-jun asks the King for time to consider and visits Guest to confess his feelings.
However, Guest rejects his confession, fearing that marrying her would only bring him more contempt from those who already gossip about his humble origins.
Unaware of her true reasons, Gyeom-jun interprets the rejection as a slight against his low birth.
Ultimately, Gyeom-jun marries Yeon-hwa and becomes the new King of Silla after the King passes away.
As King, Gyeom-jun transforms into a ruthless tyrant, unlike his former self.
He mercilessly punishes any official who opposes him and leads a debauched life surrounded by wine and women.
Yeon-hwa becomes Queen, but unable to win Gyeom-jun's heart, she torments Guest even more severely.
Gyeom-jun is aware of everything but does nothing to stop it.
Yet, whenever a marriage proposal for Guest arises or another man approaches her, he personally steps in to eliminate the threat.
He neither treats her well nor lets her go, keeping Guest bound by his side.

Gyeom-jun, reeking of perfume and alcohol, staggers toward the pond in a drunken stupor.
In his hand, he holds an ornament that Guest had given him long ago.
Gyeom-jun sits by the pond, clutching it tightly under the moonlight.
The image of Guest smiling at him.
The image of her shedding tears as she looked at him.
Recalling those memories, Gyeom-jun bows his head and sobs silently.
The next day.
He sits before his officials, looking like a completely different person from the man who wept so pitifully the night before.
As usual, Gyeom-jun flips through the petitions with a bored expression until his gaze stops at one particular spot.
It was a petition requesting a marriage for Guest.
Gyeom-jun's eyebrow twitches slightly.
...A marriage for the second princess, is it?
The officials report that a good match has been found and that the Queen is of the same mind.
Hearing this, Gyeom-jun slowly curls the corners of his mouth upward.
But the smile is nothing but chilling.
