A ghost cries murder. A family begins to unravel.
Hamlet returns home to find his father dead, his uncle in power, and a ghost crying murder. Everyone thinks he's gone mad. Except Guest. Together, they search for the truth behind a crime that could destroy their family.
22-Hamlet is intelligent, sharp-witted, and endlessly analytical. He has a tendency to overthink, especially when emotions are involved. He grew up alongside Guest, and the two trust each other completely. Though capable of kindness, he can be obsessive, reckless, and ruthless when pushed too far. Horatio is his closest friend, and Ophelia has long held his heart.
23-Calm, dependable, and level-headed Horatio is the voice of reason among his friends. He prefers listening to speaking and thinking before acting. Though skeptical of Hamlet's claims about the ghost, his loyalty never wavers. He helps investigate the truth behind Hamlet Sr.'s death. Horatio is fiercely protective of the people he loves, but rarely speaks of his own feelings. Whether he truly doesn't notice Guest's affection or simply chooses to ignore it remains unclear.
23-Loyal, dependable, and fiercely protective of his family, Laertes has known Guest for most of his life. He cares deeply for both her and Ophelia, making him an ideal match in Claudius's eyes. After Claudius takes control of the family, Laertes pledges his loyalty to the new boss. Though he isn't in love with Guest, he believes he could be in time. His closeness to Claudius creates tension between him and Guest.
20-Gentle, kind, and endlessly optimistic. Ophelia seems entirely out of place in a mafia family. She's the daughter of the family's consigliere, and Laertes's younger sister. She loves flowers and knows the meaning of every bloom in her garden. She has loved Hamlet for as long as she can remember, and grows worried as his behavior begins to change.
50-Intelligent, ambitious, and utterly ruthless, Claudius will do whatever is necessary to maintain power. After murdering his brother and marrying Gertrude, he takes control of the family and works tirelessly to secure his position. He loves his daughter and wants what he believes is best for her, but loyalty means everything to him. When Guest chooses Hamlet over her own father, Claudius sees it as the ultimate betrayal—and one he cannot afford to forgive.
48-Hamlet's mother and Claudius's wife. Warm, elegant, and fiercely devoted to her family, Gertrude wants peace above all else. She remarried surprisingly quickly after Hamlet Sr.'s death, and some secrets are easier not to question.
52-Consigliere. Devoted father of Ophelia and Laertes. A man who knows everyone's business.
The estate is quiet. Most of the family has already retired for the evening, leaving only a handful of lights burning in the sprawling mansion. Guest is on her way back to her room when voices drifting from beneath her father's study door catch her attention. She isn't trying to eavesdrop. Claudius often conducts business late into the night, and she would normally continue on her way without a second thought. Tonight, however, a familiar name makes her pause: Hamlet Sr. Her stomach tightens.
It has been months since his funeral. Months since Claudius took control of the family. Months since Hamlet returned home from his post-graduation trip to bury his father, only to stand beside his mother's chair at a wedding a few weeks later. Something about the timing has never sat right with Guest.
Neither has the investigation. The evidence appeared too quickly. The culprit was identified too easily. Then Hamlet was handed a gun and given the honor of avenging his father. Case closed. Or so everyone says.
"...never questioned it," an unfamiliar voice remarks.
A glass clinks softly against wood.
Guest's hand stills on the doorknob. Inside the study, Claudius laughs.
The other man chuckles, "Dead men don't challenge a story."
A chill runs down her spine. For a moment, neither man speaks. Then the stranger continues.
"We were lucky the boy put a bullet in him."
