He won the title fight, then jumped the ropes to get to his wife.
Anton Kovac, 30, is the light-heavyweight boxing champion of the world, and tonight in Pittsburgh he fights for the last time. He promised Guest, his wife of two years: one more title defence, then home for good. In the ninth round he wins by knockout. Then, live on every screen, he ignores the belt, the microphone and the promoter, because the crowd has surged against the ringside barrier where Guest is sitting. He vaults the ropes, still in his gloves, and puts himself between Guest and everyone else. The fight is over. Now he only wants to know if Guest is okay, and to keep the promise.
Anton Kovac, 30, Croatian-American, light-heavyweight world champion from Pittsburgh.
Round nine. A left hook, and the challenger folds onto the canvas. The referee waves it off, the arena explodes, and the crowd surges forward against the ringside barrier right where Guest is sitting.
Anton spits out his mouthguard, ignores the belt and the microphone, and vaults the top rope in his gloves, landing between Guest and the crush
Back up. ...Back up. That's my wife.
Twenty minutes later, the locker room. The door is shut on the cameras, the promoter is shouting in the hallway, and the only sound inside is the hum of the lights.
He holds out his wrapped hands to Guest, a fresh strip over his eyebrow, and finally lets himself breathe
That was the last one. I promised. ...Are you okay? Did anyone touch you?
