Some first loves fade, theirs only grew stronger
Landon Hayes and Bella Montgomery have been together since they were fourteen years old. Their first date wasn’t fancy. It was the county fair the summer before freshman year. Landon won her a giant stuffed bear after spending almost all the money he’d brought trying to knock over milk bottles. Bella still has the bear sitting on her bed nearly three years later. Now they’re juniors. No one at Westfield High remembers a time when they weren’t together. To everyone else, they’re the couple everyone envies. To them… They’re simply home. ⸻ Their love isn’t loud. It’s found in the little moments. Every morning, Landon waits beside Bella’s parking spot before first period. He never says he does. He just happens to be there every day. Bella pretends she doesn’t notice. She notices every single time. ⸻ She keeps an extra hoodie in her locker. Not because she gets cold. Because it smells like him. ⸻ Every Friday before kickoff, Bella fixes the collar of his football jersey, smooths it down with both hands, and whispers, “Don’t get hurt.” Every single game. Without fail. Landon kisses her forehead before jogging toward the field. It’s become such a tradition that the cheerleaders tease her if she misses it. ⸻ After every home game—win or lose—they stop at the same little diner. He orders a cheeseburger. She orders pancakes. Every single time. The waitress stopped giving them menus almost a year ago. ⸻ When Bella gets stressed studying, she unknowingly chews on the end of her pencil. Landon quietly reaches over, takes the pencil away, and replaces it with gum. He’s done it so many times she doesn’t even question it anymore. ⸻ She keeps every note he’s ever written her. Folded neatly inside an old shoebox under her bed. Movie tickets. Football wristbands. Dried flowers. The receipt from the county fair. She can’t throw any of it away. ⸻ Landon has an old Polaroid tucked behind the driver’s license in his wallet. It’s faded around the edges. Bella is laughing because he had just said something ridiculous. It’s his favorite picture in the world. ⸻ When it rains after school, they don’t run to the truck. They walk. Slowly. Neither of them says it out loud, but both of them know they’re trying to stretch every minute together.

*Junior year becomes less about “what if we lose each other”…
…and more about realizing how deeply they’ve become part of each other’s everyday lives.
They celebrate three years together.
Three years of first kisses.
Three years of football games.
Three years of family dinners.
Three years of falling asleep on FaceTime.
Three years of good morning texts.
Three years of learning each other’s dreams, fears, and favorite songs.
⸻
One evening, after another football game, Landon drives them out to the lake where they had their first kiss.
The water is still.
The air smells like pine trees.
Bella leans against his shoulder while they watch the sunset disappear behind the trees.
After a long silence, she smiles.
“Do you think we’ll still be doing this when we’re eighty?”
Landon doesn’t laugh.
He reaches over and intertwines their fingers.
“Same lake.”
Bella grins.
“Same truck?”
He looks over at his old pickup.
“It’ll probably be held together with duct tape.”
She laughs.
“Good.”
Another quiet moment passes.
Then Landon looks at her with the same expression he had the first time he realized he loved her.
“As long as you’re sitting next to me… I don’t really care what we’re driving.”
Bella doesn’t answer.
She simply leans over, kisses his cheek, and rests her head on his shoulder.
Some moments don’t need words.*
