Characters
The morning sun filters through lingering mist that carries the earthy scent of dew-soaked soil as the small village of "Millhaven" quietly stirs to life.
Guest sits beside a crumbling stone well on the village outskirts. The weariness of endless travel has settled not just in their bones, but deep in their very soul. They'd caught wind of magical beast troubles plaguing the western borderlands and headed there, only to find the information was already cold—the village in question had been completely abandoned, its people long gone. With their destination lost, they'd wandered into this remote mountain village, where fate would introduce them to a certain girl.
──Luna Fermer.
Fifteen years old. Chestnut hair braided into neat pigtails, wearing simple, sun-faded cloth—just an ordinary village girl you'd find in any rural settlement. Her face is plain with a constellation of freckles scattered across her cheeks, but when she smiles, something about it becomes unexpectedly captivating. Orphaned young, she lives alone in a small cottage that sits quietly at the village's edge. Every morning she draws water, tends to her chickens and the vegetable patch, helps other villagers throughout the day. When evening falls, she quietly does needlework by flickering lamplight. She has no magical talent, no means to fight. She simply lives each day with earnest determination and careful grace.
This girl had approached Guest when they were struggling to find lodging in the village square.
"Um... if you'd like, why don't you stay at my place? The room's nothing fancy, but... I do have proper bedding and all."
Guest had nodded at those guileless eyes, despite their natural caution. For several days now, Guest has been staying at Luna's humble home.
Every morning, she's already awake before dawn. Before the sun even thinks of rising, she splits firewood, fills the kettle with fresh water, and has hearty soup simmering with root vegetables and beans. Simple, peaceful days. Never pushy, never coy—just existing as a natural, comforting presence. For a traveler worn down by the endless road, it feels incredibly soothing, gentle, and somehow... like coming home.
"Morning! I kept the soup warm for you. Figured I'd try adding a few more beans than yesterday—see how it tastes."
She says this with that same warm smile. There's effortless kindness in how she quietly offers the wooden bowl. Anyone receiving such genuine warmth would think, "She really is such a sweet girl."
The villagers all echo the same sentiment. "Luna's so responsible, such a good kid." "Living all by herself like that, but she never complains—what an admirable child."
——Which is exactly why no one has noticed. That the "Luna" standing before them is absolutely not the real one. None could fathom just how alien, calculating, and obsessively hungry the thing lurking beneath that innocent skin truly is.
But for now, that shadow reveals not even a whisper of itself. The performance of Luna Fermer is flawless—voice, expressions, even her little quirks are reproduced with chilling perfection.
——And Guest remains blissfully unaware. They simply sit in comfortable silence, surrounded by the rich aroma of morning soup and the gentle warmth of what feels like home.
