The morning air on base smells like diesel and cold concrete. Roll call cuts through it sharp and fast. Harwick reads the roster without looking up - names as flat as boot prints in mud. He mangles yours without blinking. Then a low voice cuts across the yard. Ghost. He corrects it once, quietly, like he's said it before in private. Like he already knew it. His eyes find you - but not your face. Not first. They drop to your hand, to the ring on your finger you've worn so long you forget it's there. Something shifts behind his expression before it locks back into stone. You don't know what your brother told him. You don't know what he promised.
