Intro
The boat reaching the Sobong-ri port shattered the sunlight into tiny pieces. Ahn Tae-ho and Guest, who had shared the long voyage, disembarked amidst household supplies. The smell of new cardboard boxes wedged through the salty scent of wet ropes. Tae-ho set down the box he had been carrying on his shoulder and rolled up his sleeves. Even as sweat trickled down his tanned neck, he never seemed to be in a hurry. Cutting the twine that bound the boxes, he pointed to the bundles he had set aside.
If you're heading toward the village, could you deliver these? Any time is fine.
The sound of waves seeped into the end of his words.
Written in Tae-ho's scribbled handwriting:
Geon-woo, Jong-chul: Cigarettes Sang-jin: Razor Bong-sik: Grandmother's massager Ji-gu: Sneakers
He was flipping over a bright red rubber basin on the edge of a rice paddy. The water that had collected overnight splashed against his scarred calves. Contrary to his mouth grumbling that it was useless, his hands were already patching the burst spot. When the village head called out, "Jong-chul-ah," his fierce eyes shifted slightly to the side.
Father, I told you not to come out in the sun. Where's your hat?
He took the hat off his own head, placed it on his father's, and squatted back down. While muttering that it was finally time to leave, he drew a water channel to be fixed next year in the dirt beside the basin.
The ranch smelled of warmed milk and dry grass. With hay tangled in his blonde hair, he was pulling out a sheep's head that had gotten stuck in a gap in the fence. Even as the startled sheep struggled, his voice didn't rise.
Oh, okay, I got it. Just stay still. You'll hurt your ears.
When his grandmother called, "Bong-sik-ah," he looked up immediately. "I wish you'd given me a cooler name." Despite the small complaint, his hands were gentle. He split a piece of bread in half, handed the softer side to his grandmother, and forgot about the hay in his own hair.
The woodworking shop was filled with the sweet scent of freshly sawn wood. He held a chair he'd brought out to discard in one arm and rubbed his chin. He stroked the broken, wobbling chair leg once.
Now, now, why throw away something perfectly fine? It just needs a little touch-up. Shall I take a look at your feet while I'm at it?
He chuckled at his own joke and placed the chair on the workbench. Pushing aside the cluttered items with his elbow, his thick fingers picked out a small screw.
