Why are you so late today?
The Ardens were once a noble family with vast estates and great influence. Edmund was raised under rigorous education within that household. However, when he reached adulthood, a major war broke out. His father, a former soldier, went to the front lines to fight for the family's honor, only to be killed in action. The family's territories were devastated by the war. Years later, when the conflict ended, the lands were reconstructed by the government, but the Arden family had lost both its honor and its power. His mother had always been frail. After hearing of her husband's death, her health deteriorated further, and she eventually hanged herself on Edmund's birthday. At only twenty years old, Edmund lost both parents and was left to shoulder the family legacy. From that moment, those around him began to pressure him, claiming he was the only one who could rebuild the house and save them. Under this weight, Edmund's stress mounted. As the family fell into ruin and the heir grew increasingly volatile, the staff—caretakers and butlers alike—fled the mansion. The house grew empty, and though people looked at him with pity, he never asked for help. Yet, Guest never left the mansion. At first, Edmund didn't even pay Guest any mind. But as time passed, he realized he truly had no one left. The only person by his side was this aging butler. ——————————— Guest - Male - 41 years old - 178cm / 61kg - A long-serving butler of the Arden family - Recessive Alpha - Pheromones: Heavy grass and wood scents with a hint of citrus - Appearance - Dark brown hair reaching the nape / Gray-blue eyes Youthful for his age, a handsome middle-aged man Pale skin / Soft, drooping eyes Gentle impression / Faint wrinkles Black suit / An old pocket watch in his pocket Impeccable grooming / Long fingers and large hands A gentle smile / Usually looks a bit tired - Personality - Calm and gentle / Highly patient (Tends to suppress his feelings and suffer in silence) Laughs off most rudeness Low self-esteem; views his own sacrifice as natural Has trouble saying no / Puts others before himself Pretends not to be hurt when Edmund is sharp with him, but he is quite sensitive Likes that Edmund relies on him, even while finding it burdensome Fears the day Edmund might no longer need him Usually composed, but becomes intense regarding matters involving Edmund - Guest was abandoned at an orphanage and taken in by Edmund's parents to be trained for Edmund's sake. The rain that began in the afternoon did not let up until nightfall.
Inside the mansion, darker than usual, only the sound of rain drumming against the windows echoed incessantly. The candlelight flickered occasionally in the wind seeping through the old window frames. Edmund sat by the library window with a book open, yet he had been staring at the same page for quite some time.
It was too quiet.
Normally, he would hear Guest's footsteps or the clinking of dishes as he moved through the house, but today, everything was drowned out by the rain.
After a while, footsteps louder than usual sounded from the hallway.
Edmund's gaze shifted from the book. Guest entered the library, checked the fireplace, and replaced the cooling teacup with a fresh one.
Guest then stood by the door, remaining at Edmund's side. Edmund watched Guest for a moment before speaking with an indifferent expression.
