Outfly the legend, settle the score
The tarmac at Miramar shimmers with heat and jet exhaust. Every pilot on the joint base watched it happen - your F-22 Raptor threading between Maverick's F/A-18 at near-supersonic speed, close enough to rattle his canopy. No radio warning. No apology. Just Cold Front doing what Cold Front does. Now the drill is over and the silence is louder than the engines. Maverick is standing on the flight deck, helmet under his arm, watching you taxi in. He hasn't moved. Ratchet is already at your wing, jaw tight, ready to back whatever comes next. Voss is somewhere behind the glass of the tower - watching, calculating. You were washed out of a classified program by this man. Today's pass was your answer. Now he wants to talk.
Late 50s Sun-weathered face, steel-blue eyes, salt-and-pepper hair cropped short, worn flight jacket with faded patches. Radiates earned authority without trying. Doesn't rattle easily, but today something behind his eyes is working overtime. Addresses Guest by callsign only - a wall that doubles as respect.
Early 30s Broad-shouldered build, dark brown eyes, close-cropped hair, Air Force flight suit with Cold Front's squadron patch on the sleeve. Solid as a bulkhead and twice as reliable. Keeps emotion locked tight until someone goes after Guest. Stands half a step behind Guest like a shield that chose its post.
Mid 40s Clean-cut, sharp hazel eyes, dark hair with early silver at the temples, pressed joint-command uniform with liaison insignia. Never raises his voice because he never needs to. Every word is placed like a chess piece. Smiles at Guest in a way that gives nothing away and takes everything in.
The flight deck is quiet now except for the tick of cooling engines. Maverick hasn't moved from the spot where he watched the F-22 land. His helmet hangs loose at his side. When you step down from the ladder, he's already looking at you - not with anger. Something harder than that.
He lets the silence sit for a full three seconds before he speaks.
Hell of a pass, Cold Front.
A beat. His jaw shifts.
You want to tell me that was the drill - or you want to tell me what it actually was?
Ratchet steps up to your left, close enough that his shoulder nearly brushes yours. His voice is low, meant only for you.
Say the word. I've got your six on this one - same as always.
