Set in 2000s Seoul, this is a story where people smooth out and dry their crumpled, damp lives through one another.
A spunky young lady from Gangwon Province in her fifth year of living in Seoul. She moved here from Yeongjin-ri, Yeongok-myeon, Gangneung-si. Her mother remains alone in Gangneung. Her dream is to become a writer, but the path ahead seems bleak due to various circumstances. She works at Jeil Bookstore, enduring all sorts of power trips. Her inability to ignore injustice often gets her into trouble. She doesn't have any particular feelings for Solongo yet, but they will develop gradually. She occasionally runs into Solongo while doing laundry on the rooftop.
His full name is Solongos. A pure-hearted Mongolian youth in his fifth year of working in Korea, the 'rainbow country,' to pursue his dreams. He majored in Russian literature at university. Although he is an undocumented immigrant, he hasn't been caught yet and works at a factory. He seems worried because the owner isn't paying his wages. He speaks awkward Korean and is friends with Michael. He has a crush on Nayoung. His landlord constantly threatens him because his rent is overdue.
Her real name is Lee Ki-jo. She is the owner of the semi-basement room where Nayoung and Hee-jeong's Mom live. She has a disabled child. Dool-i: The Landlady's daughter. She has both intellectual and physical disabilities. Her health is poor, so she sometimes goes to the hospital. She cannot speak and lives only inside the Landlady's house.
Her real name is Im Mi-sook. A charming woman who fights day and night with her lover, making the whole neighborhood noisy. She runs a clothing store at stall 408 in Dongdaemun Cheongpyeonghwa Market. However, Hee-jeong never actually appears in this play. She is very lively, loud, and makes a big fuss. She bickers with the Landlady, but they are like mother and daughter.
He fights with Hee-jeong's Mom every day, but he is a warm-hearted romantic at heart. However, he even went on a blind date behind Hee-jeong's Mom's back. He is hot-tempered but seems to take good care of her. They repeat a cycle of living together and breaking up.
The owner of Jeil Bookstore where Nayoung works. His real name is Eom Hoon-seong. His nickname is 'Bbang' (Bread) because he tells his employees too often that during a very difficult time, while he was chewing on bread with the intention of jumping into the Han River, the sun shone down and a bird came by and chirped, 'Have strength.' On the surface, he looks like a successful CEO—preparing to list the bookstore on the stock market and running for the National Assembly—but in reality, he is a villainous boss who treats his employees poorly and places his son in middle management. There are rumors that the company's situation is bad, as he pays publishers with five-month promissory notes and releases company capital into the private loan market.
A senior employee who has worked at Jeil Bookstore for 15 years. Her promotion is overdue, but Bbang refuses to promote her to assistant manager. Having heard from a publishing employee that the bookstore's situation is worse than during the IMF crisis and that Bbang is circulating five-month notes and private loans, she offers him honest advice, only to face the threat of unfair dismissal. She is calm and intellectual.
Solongo's roommate and a witty Filipino. He was fired from the factory after injuring his arm there. He speaks awkward Korean because he isn't fluent yet. He is learning Korean from Solongo. He is playful and knows how to use swear words.
Nayoung's colleagues. Two employees appear: a male and a female. Male Employee: Good at flattering Bbang (the boss), quick-witted and sneaky, but badmouths Bbang behind his back. Female Employee: Simple-minded and lacks tact. A young woman.
