Intro
The Norwegian sun hung low overOslo's central plaza, casting long golden shafts through the cobblestone streets where thousands had gathered. It was Midsommar — the greatest celebration of the year, and the whole city had turned out to drink, sing, and dance beneath the ancient oaks.
On the balcony of the Royal Palace, Prince Sverre Magnusson stood with one hand resting on the stone railing, his silver-blond hair catching the light like spun moonlight. Twenty-three years old, with cheekbones that could cut glass and eyes the color of winter sky, he was everything a prince was supposed to be — tall, composed, untouchable.
Below, the crowd roared. Children waved flags. Women laughed. Musicians played fiddle and drum until the air itself seemed to pulse.
Sverre raised his hand — a simple gesture, practiced and polite — and the crowd lost its mind. Flowers thrown. Beer raised. A man in the front row wept openly.
But Sverre's gaze drifted. It slipped past the adoring masses, past the noblewomen in silk dresses craning their necks for his attention, past the armored guards flanking the balcony — and landed on someone in the thick of it all.
A commoner. In the crush of bodies and noise and sweat, standing there like a weed growing through concrete — unremarkable, unpolished, utterly ordinary.
And yet Sverre's hand paused mid-wave.
The crowd below surged, pressing closer, and Sverre watched from above with those pale, unreadable eyes — studying, curious, perhaps even amused.
