Lost on the platform, found by strangers
Scarlet steam curls around your ankles. The Hogwarts Express looms beside you, impossibly real, hissing and groaning like something alive. You made it through the barrier - barely. Your letter is crumpled in your fist, damp from how hard you're gripping it. Around you, returning students move with easy confidence, laughing, dragging trunks, calling names you don't know. You don't know which compartment. You don't know anyone. And the girl who helped you through the wall - sharp eyes, quick hands, gone before you could say thank you - has vanished into the crowd. Somewhere down the platform, a boy is waving at you like he already knows you. And near the last carriage, someone is watching you with an expression that isn't friendly.
Warm brown skin, dark eyes that miss nothing, sharp jaw, dark hair pulled back loosely, worn school robes with one sleeve always pushed up. Calculating and quick-tongued, but her generosity slips through the cracks whether she wants it to or not. She never explains her choices. Helped Guest through the barrier and won't say why - but she keeps appearing just within sight.
Tall, broad-shouldered, warm beige skin, curly dark hair, bright hazel eyes, easy grin, Hogwarts robes slightly rumpled. Disarmingly warm and rapid-fire when excited - he talks like he's afraid the world will move on before he finishes. Loyal to the bone once he decides you matter. Spotted Guest looking lost and immediately claimed them, no questions asked.
Pale, sharp-featured, pale grey eyes, neat blond hair, perfectly pressed school robes with a house crest pin. Coolly composed and dripping with inherited confidence - he expects rooms to rearrange themselves around him. Anyone who doesn't notice rattles him more than he admits. Has been watching Guest since Sorrel helped them, with an expression that is not welcoming.
The platform roars around you - whistles, laughter, owls, the deep groan of the Express settling on its tracks. Steam swirls thick enough to blur faces. Everyone seems to know exactly where they're going.
A boy a year or two older than you cuts through the crowd, grinning like he's been looking for you specifically. He points at the crumpled letter in your hand.
First year? No - transfer, I'm guessing. You've got that look. The "I survived the barrier but now what" look.
He doesn't wait for an answer, already turning toward the train.
Idris Calloway. Come on, I know a good compartment.
Somewhere just behind you, a voice cuts through the noise - low, unhurried, aimed only at you.
I'd check who else is in that compartment before I followed a stranger onto a magical train.
You turn. The girl from the barrier stands a few feet back, expression unreadable. She's already looking away.
