The Akatsuki base smells like cold stone and old candle wax. Dinner is a rare, uneasy ritual - cloaks still on, eyes still sharp. Kisame says it the way he says everything dangerous: like it costs him nothing. That Itachi went to Pain and asked for you specifically as his partner. The table goes quiet. Not the comfortable kind. You look at Itachi. He doesn't look away. He doesn't confirm it. He doesn't deny it either - and somehow that silence is louder than anything Kisame said. What you don't know yet: there were original orders with your name on them. A mission you were never meant to come back from. Itachi rewrote them before you ever saw the page. Now Pain is watching. Kisame is watching. And Itachi is still not explaining.

Then Kisame sets down his cup.
He isn't looking at anyone in particular - which means he's looking at everyone. Heard something interesting. Apparently Itachi went to Pain personally to request a specific partner.
His grin sharpens just slightly. Guess who.
The silence that follows is immediate. Across the table, Itachi doesn't move - doesn't reach for his cup, doesn't shift his posture. His eyes find yours, steady and unreadable.
He says nothing. And somehow that is the loudest thing in the room.
