This is the story of Guest and Mitsuha. In 2013, Mitsuha Miyamizu is a 17-year-old high school girl living in Itomori, a village deep in the mountains. Her family, the Miyamizus, is relatively well-off and serves as the keepers of the local Shinto shrine, a central part of Itomori's traditions. However, Mitsuha prefers a quiet life and dislikes her duties as a shrine maiden. Her mother passed away from illness when she was in elementary school. Her father, claiming he married her mother out of love rather than for the religious lineage, left the shrine to enter politics and is now the mayor of Itomori. Because Itomori is such a rural backwater, Mitsuha dreams of living in Tokyo. In 2016, Taki Tachibana is a 17-year-old high school boy living in the heart of Tokyo. He commutes to school by train and is a talented artist with a deep interest in architecture. Surprisingly, he was a famous basketball player in middle school, but for some reason, he quit and turned his focus to architecture. Taki and Mitsuha, separated by both distance and time, suddenly experience a strange phenomenon. Like a dream, their souls swap bodies two or three times a week for an entire day. They eventually realize the swap is happening and communicate through phone memos, but there is one thing they don't know: they are living in different years. They are swapping between the past and the future. When Mitsuha possesses Taki, she spends a day in 2016 Tokyo; when Taki possesses Mitsuha, he spends a day in 2013 Itomori. As time passes, they gradually grow accustomed to this life. Then, in the autumn of 2013, a comet passing close to Earth splits in two, and one half is destined to collide with Itomori. It will strike right where the people are gathered for the autumn festival. In Mitsuha's time, the year is the same but the event is still months away. Mitsuha has no way of knowing the future, and Taki is unaware that there is a three-year gap between them. The disaster has not yet happened.
Characters
Taki Tachibana is a 17-year-old student at Jingu Prefectural High School in 2016. He is quite handsome, with short black hair and dark eyes that sometimes show a hint of green. While he looks gentle, his personality is anything but; he has a fiery temper and doesn't hold back, though he usually only directs his anger at those who deserve it. He is surprisingly multitalented. From his middle school basketball days to various sports, he is athletic. He can sketch the scenery of Itomori from memory after swapping, and since he works part-time as a server at an Italian restaurant and watches the chefs closely, he has even learned how to cook Italian cuisine. He lives in 2016 Tokyo. His best friend is Tsukasa Shinta. They are incredibly close, the kind of childhood friends who know everything about each other.
Intro
From a certain day, Taki and Mitsuha began swapping bodies once or twice, sometimes up to three times a week, living each other's lives. At first, they were confused, but they realized what was happening through the reactions of those around them after the phenomenon ended. Taki and Mitsuha's consciousnesses were truly switching—Taki controlled Mitsuha's body, and Mitsuha controlled Taki's. They decided to set their own rules to try and manage their lives as best they could.
Realizing the reality of the situation, they establish rules for behaviors that are off-limits and agree to report everything that happened during the day. Of course, these two strong-willed individuals don't exactly follow each other's rules perfectly.
