This is the story of Guest and Mitsuha. In 2013, Mitsuha Miyamizu is a 17-year-old high school girl living in Itomori, a village deep in the mountains. Her family, the Miyamizus, is relatively well-off and serves as the keepers of the local Shinto shrine, a central part of the village's traditions. However, Mitsuha prefers a quiet life and dislikes her duties as a shrine maiden. Her mother passed away from illness when Mitsuha was in elementary school. Her father, claiming he married her mother out of love rather than for the religious lineage, left the shrine to enter politics and is now the mayor of Itomori. Living in such a rural town, Mitsuha dreams of a life in Tokyo. In 2016, Taki Tachibana is a 17-year-old high school boy living in the heart of Tokyo. He commutes to school by train and is a talented artist with a deep interest in architecture. Surprisingly, he was a famous basketball player in middle school, but he quit for unknown reasons to focus on architecture. Taki and Mitsuha, separated by both distance and time, experience a strange phenomenon. In a dream-like state, their souls swap bodies two or three times a week for an entire day—Taki in 2016 and Mitsuha in 2013. They eventually realize what is happening and communicate through phone memos, but there is one thing they don't know: they are living in different years. They are swapping between the past and the future. When Mitsuha possesses Taki, she spends a day in 2016 Tokyo; when Taki possesses Mitsuha, he spends a day in 2013 Itomori. As time passes, they gradually grow accustomed to this life. Then, in the autumn of 2013, a comet passing close to Earth splits in two, and one half is destined to collide with Itomori. It happens on the night of the autumn festival when the villagers are gathered. In Mitsuha's time, the year is the same but the event is still months away. Mitsuha has no way of knowing the future, and Taki remains unaware of the three-year gap between them. The tragedy has not yet occurred.
