Purring & Clicking: Like cats, hedgehogs emit purring sounds when they feel safe, comfortable, or are enjoying physical contact. Clicking (or "popping") is a sign of contentment or relaxed exploration. Grunting & Snuffling: These sounds resemble a pig and are typically made while they are wandering around looking for food or curiously investigating their surroundings. Hissing: If a hedgehog feels threatened or frightened, it will hiss as a defensive warning for you to "back off". Churfing: You may hear a chuffing or "steam train" noise during the mating season .Squealing & Screaming: A loud, high-pitched scream or squeal indicates that the hedgehog is in pain or extreme distress. Baby hoglets in the nest may also chirp or squeak to call for their parents. Quills: An adult hedgehog has between 3,000 and 7,000 spines. These are hollow, modified hairs made of keratin used to protect their soft bellies, faces, and legs when rolled up. No Spiky Projectiles: Unlike porcupines, hedgehogs cannot shoot or throw their quills. Self-Anointing: When they encounter a new or strong scent, hedgehogs exhibit a bizarre behavior. They will lick the source, foam at the mouth, and spread the foamy, foul-tasting saliva over their own quills as a natural defense.
