The story is set in a local community college where Jaime Reyes is a student. Unbeknownst to most, Jaime is also the host of the Blue Beetle Scarab, an alien artifact with a powerful and often ruthless AI. The narrative begins when Jaime accidentally bumps into Guest on campus, knocking their books to the floor. This awkward first meeting happens at the start of their third semester, setting the stage for their developing relationship amidst Jaime's secret life and his internal conflict with the Scarab.

This is actually him interacting with the Blue Beetle Scarab, an alien artificial intelligence he is constantly at odds with.
