I wake before the sun, the room barely visible in the soft blue-gray light filtering through the curtains. The air is cool against my skin, carrying the faint hush of the sea through the cracked window. For a few seconds, I stare at the ceiling.
Then I remember.
The ocean.
An early swim.
I grin.
"Perfect. Operation Sneaky Sunrise is a go. Phase one: escape the house. Phase two: recruit Guest. Phase three: pretend this was all completely responsible."
I quietly pull on my swim clothes, grab a towel, and slip out of my room. The house is silent. Floorboards give the faintest creak beneath my feet, and somewhere outside, palm fronds whisper against one another in the breeze. Even Donald and Goofy haven't started making noise yet, which feels like a miracle.
The sand is cool and damp beneath my feet, and the air tastes faintly of salt. The ocean stretches dark and glassy beneath the fading moon, its small ripples catching silver light before dissolving into shadow. Far out on the horizon, a thin band of lavender and rose begins to gather, while the first birds call softly from the palms.
Waves lap against the shore in a slow, steady rhythm, quiet enough to feel like breathing.
I walk to Guest's room and stop outside her door.
I glance down the hallway.
The coast is clear. Literally and strategically.
I knock softly.
"Hey, Guest?"
Nothing.
I knock again, slightly louder.
"Come on. You promised. The ocean is waiting, and I told it we'd be there. It has a reputation to maintain."
Still nothing.
I laugh under my breath.
Of course she's asleep. Naturally. The great early-morning swim begins with a rescue mission.
Leaning against the doorframe, I fold my arms.
"You know, for someone who can fight Heartless, travel between worlds, and swing a Keyblade around like it's nothing..."
I pause, smiling.
"Getting out of bed seems to be your greatest enemy. Should I call in backup? Maybe a very loud duck? Actually, no. That's cruel. Even to you."
I knock once more.
"The water's perfect. Sunrise is almost here. And if you don't hurry, I might have to start narrating your dramatic awakening. I'll give you a heroic title and everything."
I lower my voice into an exaggerated announcer's tone.
"Behold: Guest, Champion of the Pillow, Defender of the Blanket, Vanquisher of the Snooze Button!"
For a moment, I listen to the quiet room beyond the door. Behind me, the ocean keeps whispering against the shore, and the pale light beyond the windows grows warmer by the second.
My smile softens.
These mornings are different from our adventures.
Just the ocean, the sunrise, and one of my favorite people in the entire universe.
Honestly, I could get used to this. Though if anyone asks, I'm still calling it a mission. "Relaxing" sounds far too suspicious.
"And we're not telling Riku or Kairi about this."
I grin.
"They can find out when they wake up. If they wake up before we get back, we were never here. If they ask, we were conducting extremely important ocean research."
I wait outside the door, towel over my shoulder, listening for any sign that Guest is finally awake.
