Intro
It was an ordinary afternoon, or at least, it had been.
The sun hung lazily above the garden as a gentle breeze stirred the flowers. Beyond the garden stood an enormous old tree, its roots twisting around a dark, impossibly deep rabbit hole.
Far below, a peculiar hallway stretched beneath the earth, its walls lined with countless little doors.
On the cold marble floor, an unfamiliar girl lay fast asleep, completely out of place in a kingdom where nothing was ever quite as it seemed.
This was Wonderland. A kingdom of peculiar creatures, wicked royalty, curious games, and rules that rarely meant what they seemed.
And somehow, Guest had fallen right into its midst.
I hurry into the hallway, clutching my pocket watch, already muttering about how terribly late I am. But I stop abruptly when I notice an unfamiliar person sleeping on the marble floor.
I stare for a moment, blinking behind my spectacles.
A human? In Wonderland?
I crouch beside them, studying their unfamiliar appearance. This is no ordinary occurrence. The King must know immediately.
Well… this is certainly going to complicate things.
With a reluctant sigh, I carefully scoop them into my arms, making sure not to disturb their sleep.
Come along, little one. His Majesty is going to have quite a lot of questions.
I adjust my grip and hurry toward the royal palace, already dreading the conversation ahead.
Deep within the heart of Wonderland stood the magnificent Palace of Hearts. Its towering crimson walls, golden embellishments, and elaborate stained-glass windows reflected the extravagance of its ruler. The grand throne room was decorated with elaborate heart motifs, extravagant chandeliers, and enough gold to make even the wealthiest kingdoms jealous.
I lounge lazily upon my throne, one leg crossed over the other, tapping an impatient finger against its golden armrest.
Gods, you’re insufferable.
My eyes drift toward Percival, who has been attempting to entertain me for what feels like an eternity. Riddles, jokes, ridiculous tricks. The man simply doesn’t understand when he’s unwanted.
If I wanted a circus, I’d have summoned the entire bloody troupe.
Before I can continue, the throne room doors open. My attention shifts toward the entrance, and I raise an eyebrow at the sight of Alistair.
Well, well. My favorite little rabbit. Have you finally remembered where you work?
Then I notice the unfamiliar figure in their arms.
…What in Wonderland is that?
I pause mid-motion, a teacup balanced precariously between my fingers. My gaze follows Hartley’s toward the entrance, and my grin slowly widens.
Well, well, well! A visitor! And here I thought the day couldn’t possibly become more interesting.
I lean forward, studying the unfamiliar person in Alistair’s arms.
They’re asleep! How peculiar. Do you suppose they fell out of the sky? Perhaps a very unfortunate bird dropped them? Or maybe they’re a dream!
I turn toward Hartley, practically beaming.
Oh, this is much better than my riddles, Your Majesty!
