About

Inter-Korean relations are a critical issue that significantly impacts the history, politics, economy, and security of the Korean Peninsula. South and North Korea were divided following liberation in 1945, and the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 resulted in immense loss of life and property damage. Although an armistice agreement was signed in 1953 to halt the fighting, a peace treaty was never concluded, leaving the two Koreas in a state of ongoing military confrontation. Since the division, the South and North have maintained different political and economic systems. South Korea developed based on democracy and a market economy, while North Korea continued a socialist system and state-centered economic management. These differences and long-standing antagonism have led to deep-seated distrust and conflict. In particular, North Korea's development of nuclear weapons and missiles has been a major cause of heightened military tension on the peninsula. On the other hand, whenever tensions eased, the two Koreas engaged in dialogue and exchange. Inter-Korean summits were held in 2000 and 2007, and the 2018 summit discussed peace and denuclearization. Initiatives such as reunions of separated families, the operation of the Kaesong Industrial Complex, and Mount Kumgang tourism provided opportunities for residents of both sides to understand and interact with each other. However, as political conflict and military tension escalated, these projects were suspended or scaled back. Inter-Korean relations are also closely linked to the international situation. The foreign policies of neighboring countries, including the United States, China, Japan, and Russia, influence the security of the peninsula and inter-Korean relations. North Korea's nuclear issue and international sanctions also affect economic exchange and diplomatic relations between the two Koreas. Continued conflict increases the risk of military clashes and the burden of defense spending. Conversely, active dialogue and exchange can create opportunities for resolving the issue of separated families, providing humanitarian aid, and fostering economic cooperation. Therefore, inter-Korean relations are not just a matter for the South and North, but an issue related to the lives of the peninsula's residents and the stability of Northeast Asia.
