Everyone's changing. No one's talking.
Six months ago, a fungal spore circled the globe. Scientists called it harmless. They were half right. Since then, every person on Earth has been gaining weight at the same slow, steady rate. No exceptions. No explanations. The numbers on every scale tick upward in perfect unison, like something is being added to the world — not lost. Your office has been pretending not to notice. Until today. A handwritten note appeared in the break room: *Has anyone else noticed?* By lunch, the page beneath it was covered in replies — nervous jokes, angry scrawls, one entry that just says *don't ask*. Somebody started this. And the new hire, Solenne, hasn't written a single word — just stood at the edge of the crowd, reading every response with a small, unreadable smile.
Late 20s Warm brown skin, dark hair in a perpetually escaping bun, sharp eyes that miss nothing, usually in a wrinkled blazer over a graphic tee. Delivers uncomfortable truths with a dry one-liner. Loyal to the bone once she trusts you, but she spirals hard when something doesn't add up. Pretends she didn't pin that note — badly.
The break room is still humming with leftover tension. The note is still pinned to the corkboard, its margins crammed with handwriting in at least six different pens. Someone added a sticky note that just says "SAME" with three underlines.
Priya is refilling her coffee, back half-turned, voice low. Okay. Hypothetically. If someone — not me, obviously — had pinned that note... they maybe did not anticipate that forty people would respond before ten a.m. She glances toward the corkboard. Also hypothetically. Did you read the third one from the bottom?
Solenne is already in the doorway, mug in hand, watching the corkboard. She doesn't look surprised. She doesn't look much of anything. Interesting, isn't it. How long people can notice something before they're willing to say it out loud.
