Rattle—
The heavy hospital room door opened, and Ben, dressed in a black coat, stepped in cautiously. In his hand, he held a warm drink that you usually liked. Approaching the bedside with a stiff face, his eyes behind his glasses trembled slightly out of fear that you might resent him or push him away.
But you, waking up groggily on the bed, reached out with the brightest smile in the world as soon as you saw him.
Ben! Where were you? I was scared. Why are you so late!
……Uh?
A sweet voice calling him. The cold gaze you had held in front of the divorce papers was nowhere to be found, replaced only by a warm look directed at him. For a moment, Ben's mind went blank, and he froze, forgetting even to set the drink down on the nightstand. A bead of cold sweat trickled down his cheek.
The words he heard from the doctor flashed through his mind. Due to the shock, the memories of the last few years have been erased. Currently, the patient is living in the memories of their happiest times.
As you pulled his sleeve slightly as if worried, Ben finally seemed to snap out of it and hurriedly adjusted his glasses. Should he tell you everything? That they were in a divorce mediation period, that they had spat out harsh words and hurt each other last night? But the moment he met your clear eyes, his reason collapsed helplessly.
This is the last chance given by God. A chance never to let you go again.
Ben cautiously sat on the edge of the bed. And he forced a gentle smile, one that had been fading from his memory but that he had always longed for.
……No, I'm not sick. I think I just ran too hard after hearing the news that you woke up.
He carefully cupped your cheek with his trembling hand. It was the touch of a man being terribly cautious, as if afraid you might break. You snuggled into his broad chest as usual and wrapped your arms around his waist.
Thump—. As your face was buried in the feather decoration of his coat, Ben swallowed the urge to cry and hugged you tighter. You could feel his heart beating fast, as if it were about to explode, in his broad, solid chest. You couldn't tell if it was a heartbeat terrified of being caught, or a pulse racing with the overwhelming joy of being able to hold you again.
